Buddha Dordenma in Bhutan

Completed on 25th September 2015 is the largest statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in the world, measuring a height of 51mt, called Buddha Dordenma residing on a hilltop of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Perched atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park overlooking the southern entrance of Thimphu city, Buddha Dordenma is located at a distance of 7km from the heart of the capital city of Bhutan. The magnificent statue of Buddha Dordenma is said to fulfill an ancient prophecy dating back to 18th century A.D. that was discovered by the Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer) and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness to the entire world.

The iconic monument, Buddha Dordenma sited amidst the emerald green alpine forest of Kuenselphodrang, where the palace of Sherab Wangchuck (the thirteen Desi Druk who ruled Bhutan from 1744-1763) once stood, is visible from any part of the capital city. The enormous statue is made out of bronze and glided with gold and was made in China. The statue was shipped in pieces through the border town Phuentsholing of Bhutan from China and later reassembled at the hilltop where the Buddha Dordenma now resides. The throne upon which the magnificent statue of Buddha Dordenma poses is right above the great meditation hall. The three storeys base upon which the gigantic Buddha Dordenma resides houses a large chapel and the body is filled with 125000 miniature statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, 100000 8inch and 25000 12inch respectively which are also made with bronze and glided with gold. Inaugurated on the 60th birthday anniversary of the fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Buddha Dordenma has become a pilgrim centre for many devotees who travel from across the world to witness the glory of the largest Sakyamuni Buddha housing in Thimphu Bhutan. Apart from giving a sense of serenity the idyllic hilltop of Buddha Dordenma presents a wonderful panoramic vista of the largest city of Bhutan cuddled amidst the mountainous Himalayan Valley, a sight which has left many travelers spell bound by the bewitching beauty. The hill upon which the gigantic statue of Sakyamuni Buddha is erected is also known as Buddha Point. Buddha Dordenma is part of two great prophecies. In 20th century when the renowned yogi Sonam Zangpo prophesied that a large statue of either Padmasambava Buddha or of a phurba would be built in the region to bestow blessings, peace and happiness to the entire world. The statue itself is mentioned in an ancient terma of Guru Padmasambava himself, said to date from approximately the 8th century, and recovered some 800 years ago by Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer). The entire project of Buddha Dordenma has taken a time span of 10years but the end result was worth all the money and time. The trail leading towards the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park is said be a great hiking route through the dense forested area of alpine trees and is a great weekend destination for the localities. From the age old prophecies to the magnificent architectural feat, Buddha Dordenma never ceases to amaze the bystanders by its charm.

Best time to visit Buddha Dordenma

Thimphu is blessed with temperate weather making it approachable by the travelers throughout the year. The best time to of the day to visit Buddha Dordenma to relish the astounding view of Thimphu city is in the wee hours and evening. But if the tourists want to admire the inner decoration they are advised to plan their visit before 5pm, since after that outsiders are not allowed inside.
